The open-ended problem-solving process that has wide use in commercial product design and social innovation is rapidly migrating to the classroom.  Design thinking typically starts by identifying user needs through empathy-building experiences before moving to defining, ideating, prototyping, and refining results based on feedback.  The process is iterative rather than linear, producing multiple drafts and prototypes en route to innovation.
